PETER MADSEN’S FREYA
Peter Madsen of Copenhagen,
Denmark designed and built this excellent diesel-electric submarine.

Peter welding reinforcement ribs into FREYA’s pressure hull. For the homebuilt submarine enthusiast, this is what it’s all about. There is nothing else quite like the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from operating a submarine you designed and built yourself. Ask the guy who owns one! ;-)

The submarine in the shop during construction. This was a very ambitious project, yet it wasn’t produced by a large boatbuilding facility. It really shows what a dedicated homebuilt submarine enthusiast can do.

Launch day, and Peter has attracted quite a large crowd of
spectators. I really like the lines of
this submarine: an interesting mix of classic U-Boat and modern minisub. Beautiful, and functional too!

Captain Madsen piloting his submarine FREYA on the surface
under diesel power. That’s another
thing I like about this submarine: it has the ability to travel great distances
under its own power.

An
external camera catches the action as FREYA begins to dive.

FREYA
running submerged at periscope depth.

An aft
view of the submarine as it motors past the camera.

The front port side of the submarine as it cruises by from
right to left. Notice the observation
dome with viewports at the very front of the hull.

Towards the end of a beautiful day, the remarkable submarine FREYA (named for the Nordic Goddess of Love and Passion) heads for home. Good job, Peter! Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.
